What can a notary public accomplish?
National Notary Association describes a notary as a public servant that is paid for signing important documents or administering oaths. If a document has an originator, a notary public must notarize it. The notary public verifies the signer's identity, confirms that they are the original signer and makes sure the document is understood by the intended recipient. It is the job of a notary to stop fraudulent signing. To verify an individual's identity, a notary will require them to produce a driver’s license, government-issued identification card or another form of ID. It will also need to include their signature and some information about that person.
A Notary can’t help you prepare documents
The notary public can't assist with the preparation of a document. However, it is vital that they are impartial/neutral in this process. The primary purpose of a notary is to serve as an impartial witness when a document is signed. It is illegal for a notary to assist with the preparation of a document, which would constitute an illegal practice. The notary would lose his/her license to practice in the state. The notary public has the right to refuse notarizing documents where he/she can't verify any signers. The notary public must also decline to notarize documents that they are personally financially involved.
